Meet a Player

Meet a player from the Ulster Orchestra and learn about the Orchestra in an informal and entertaining way. An Ulster Orchestra player will visit the classroom to demonstrate his/her instrument and talk about what life is like as a professional orchestral musician.

Ensemble Concerts

These lively concerts, given by groups of musicians from the Ulster Orchestra, include great pieces of classical and contemporary music along with plenty of audience participation. Select any of the Ulster Orchestra’s ensembles to visit your school or community group.

Creative Music Projects

Creative music projects encourage active participation and experimentation in the creation of music and are designed to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum. One or more workshop sessions may also culminate in a final performance for school, friends and family. The workshops explore pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre and form, and can be adapted to suit all levels from primary to post-primary. All Creative Music Projects start from £80 plus travel outside Belfast. The price will increase depending on the chosen programme and the number of players involved.

Electro-Acoustic Workshop

Elektra – the Orchestra’s electric string quartet – explores the differences in sound production between acoustic and electric instruments, the use of effects and enhancements and the technical difficulties of using amplified sounds.

Various Ulster Orchestra groups introduce their instruments through practical demonstrations and audience participation.

School Band / Orchestra Coaching & Conducting

Ulster Orchestra players offer performance coaching to school groups and ensembles over a number of 1 – 2 hour sessions.

The Science of Sound

Libby Bennett & Julian Partridge – flute & bassoon – introduce the science of sound and music with demonstrations of how sound is made.

Trumpets & Drums

Paul Young, Patrick McCarthy and Mark Robinson – trumpet and percussion – introduce brass and percussion through creative music making, musical games and pupil participation. Specific projects can be arranged with the players.

Ulster Brass Plus

Your school’s band, orchestra and/or choir experience an interactive workshop and are given the opportunity to rehearse and perform specially written music with members of the quintet at a recital for parents and the whole school.
